Hi Pat
Kev here..

When importing a .MID into a Korg i-Series Workstation's 16-track SMF
seqencer, it will invariably choose the actual file name as its named
and unless you change this, it will retain this name upon saving..
The reason the option "NEW_SONG" is being used is because there may be
no name embedded within the SNG/.MID inputting text in the song name
field will force the Korg i-Series ROM software to use that text field
for naming your .SNG and or .MID which is saved to floppy diskette..

In Song mode, press "Page +" button until you are taken to page
11:UTILITY.. This page contains a "RENAME SONG" feature, you can employ
10 ASCII characters in the text string, these characters will not only
be embedding your .SNG and or .MID with a score name but will also be
used to name the file for saving to disks.. One word however, although
10 ASCII characters are used embedded within the file, only the first 8
are used to name the file as per 8.3 in MSDOS file name protocol.. The
SNG will retain the complete 10 ASCII characters embedded within the
file but any .MID you save will only retain the first 8 ASCII
characters.. If you save from one of the song locations as a .MID file
and you've named this as described above, then port the .MID over to a
computer and then import into this into a software seqencing program..
Once you've imported the .MID you'll see the first track within the
sequencer has retained the ASCII text field from the file name used..
This is so for both 0 and 1 SMF .MIDs
You can of course name a .SNG and .MID within the "RENAME SONG" feature
whatever you like, similarly whatever name you decide to embed within
the .SNG and or .MID doesn't necessarily need to be as a MSDOS file
name, it could be anything that's up to you the user :-) Once you've
used the "RENAME SONG" feature on page 11:UTILITY from the ROM software
in the Song mode, then the first 8 characters of this ASCII text string
will be used by default to name the file being saved from that
particular song location.. You do have the user option to change this
in DISK mode and you can name the MSDOS file whatever you want; it
doesn't have to mirror the ASCII text string embedded within the .SNG
and or .MID.. You can do this for all 10 song memory locations from
song 0 - 9

Hope this info was what you were looking for?
If you go to Mark Robson's KORG i-Series WEB Site and download his Korg
i-Series composition "Chameleon" in Korg i-Series .SNG file format,
load this into your i1 into song 0, then look at the top of the LCD
screen and you'll see Mark has named his song at the top part of the
screen using the alloted 10 ASCII characters as discussed above..
Mark's also used a cute feature for flipping beyond that song location
to the next and so on which communicates his name and email address
information in the other song name locations.. Like a multi-CD player
after "Chameleon" has played the other songs play but just display
Mark's personal details embedded within the song text fields, nice
professional touch :-)
